CryptoSphere News, citing TechCrunch, reported that recently hackers stole more than $290 million worth of cryptocurrency from the Kelp DAO protocol, becoming the largest crypto theft incident this year to date. The LayerZero project accused North Korea of carrying out the hack on Monday. The attackers used Kelp DAO’s LayerZero bridging technology to launch the attack, exploiting flaws in its security configuration; without requesting multi-factor verification, they approved transactions, thereby executing fraudulent transactions. The company said “initial indications” suggest that the North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor may be behind the scheme. In recent years, North Korean hackers have performed exceptionally well in crypto theft. Last year, they stole more than $2 billion, and combined with theft since 2017, the total amount of cryptocurrency stolen by North Korea is about $6 billion.
