Wu Shuo learned that, according to China News Weekly, a 19-year-old freshman girl named Xiao Yang (pseudonym) from a university in Guangdong was invited by a friend to travel to Thailand to attend the Songkran Festival on April 10. After arriving in Bangkok, she was immediately taken under control and sold to an anti-scam (telecom fraud) park in the Three Pagodas area along the Myanmar border. On April 13, her family made contact with a man who claimed to be a “kind older brother.” He said he had spent 29,000 U (the cryptocurrency USDT) to buy Xiao Yang from the snakehead trafficker and demanded that the family pay a ransom of 30,000 U (equivalent to about 200,000+ yuan RMB) to get her released. After the family transferred the money as instructed, the man kept stalling and making excuses, such as “Songkran Festival roads being shut down” and “the park only takes people in, not out, recently.” According to the latest update on April 23, after media exposure, he initially agreed to release her, but he still did not provide any specific location, and the two sides were still negotiating. At present, the Baiyun Branch of the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau has filed a case for investigation on April 15 for illegal detention, and the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education has also stepped in.
