Interesting what is happening in El Salvador. Children now pay very naturally with Bitcoin at McDonald's – this is actually a fascinating sign of how normal cryptocurrencies have become there.
Background: In 2021, El Salvador became the first country in the world to introduce Bitcoin as an official currency. Since then, the government has actively tried to integrate digital currencies into the daily life of the population. And apparently, it works – if even schoolchildren can pay with crypto.
What’s remarkable is not only that it’s technically possible. It’s more about the fact that an entire generation is growing up for whom paying with crypto is completely normal. No fear, no skepticism – just a means of payment like any other.
Paying with Bitcoin at McDonald's is, of course, also symbolically interesting. A global fast-food company accepting cryptocurrencies in a country sends a strong signal. It shows that the integration of Bitcoin is not just a political idea but actually works in practice.
From my perspective, this is an important moment for the acceptance of cryptocurrencies. When young people pay with crypto effortlessly, without thinking about it, something fundamentally shifts. El Salvador thus becomes a test case for what a society looks like where digital currencies are truly part of everyday life.
