Ministry of Natural Resources Tsunami Warning Center predicts that a magnitude 7.4 earthquake near the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan, triggered a local tsunami in the vicinity of the epicenter, but it will not affect China’s coast. According to the official measurement by the China Seismic Network, at 15:52 on April 20, 2026 (Beijing time), a magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred in the sea area near eastern Honshu, Japan (39.85°N, 143.10°E), with a depth of 10 kilometers. Based on the latest monitoring and analysis results, the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources reports that this earthquake has already caused a local tsunami near the epicenter. The Kuji station in Japan detected a 0.8-meter tsunami wave at 17:34 local time, but it will not impact China’s coast. Wang Zongchen, senior engineer at the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, told Xinhua News Agency that this earthquake and tsunami pose no threat to China’s offshore waters and will not cause disaster in distant sea areas such as the eastern offshore. People traveling or engaging in coastal activities in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, and other areas in Japan should follow local emergency arrangements; ships involved in transportation or fishing operations passing through relevant sea areas should pay attention to the Pacific Ocean tsunami warning system information.
