Just noticed X is making some pretty bold moves lately. They've launched this Handle Marketplace thing where Premium Plus and Business users can now buy or claim inactive X handles. Pretty interesting strategy when you think about it.
The pricing is wild though. We're talking anywhere from $2,500 for decent handles up to over a million for the really rare ones. It's basically turning usernames into an asset class, which honestly makes sense from X's perspective given how much advertising revenue has been taking a hit.
But here's where it gets messy. The whole thing lacks real transparency about how they're actually defining what counts as inactive, and the pricing logic is pretty opaque too. People are already questioning whether this is really fair, especially considering X has forced username reassignments on users before. That history makes folks nervous about their actual rights when it comes to owning an X handle now.
It's a revenue play, no doubt about it. Whether users embrace buying premium X handles or push back on the lack of clarity remains to be seen. Definitely worth watching how this evolves.
