Multiple school shootings occur, and the Turkish president calls for a comprehensive strengthening of school security

Turkish President Erdogan on the 20th called for a comprehensive strengthening of school security measures nationwide and emphasized that campus safety is a “top priority.” Erdogan delivered a televised speech to the nation after the cabinet meeting ended. Erdogan said, “Campus safety is the top priority of our work, and we will not compromise on this issue.” He stated that regulations regarding gun control will be further tightened and penalties for violators will be increased. Erdogan also called for enhancing the capabilities of cybersecurity departments to prevent harmful online information from harming young people. He further demanded strengthening social and psychological support mechanisms for students, as well as “establishing a mechanism that can identify risks early and intervene effectively.” On the 14th and 15th of this month, two school shootings occurred consecutively in Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş provinces in southeastern Turkey, resulting in 10 deaths and nearly 30 injuries.
