An interesting aspect of Tesla's corporate strategy that is often overlooked. When the company opened its patents, many thought it was just Musk's generosity. In reality, it's more complicated.
Tesla realized that open patents are a powerful tool against patent trolls. These organizations thrive on buying patents and then suing companies, demanding huge royalties. When patents are publicly available, trolls find it much harder to manipulate them in court.
I noticed that the company is very honest about this. Their patent strategy is not about protecting against competitors but about blocking organizations that use the legal system not for innovation but for profit. This is a fundamentally different approach.
Additionally, open patents accelerate the development of the entire industry. When engineers can freely use Tesla's technological solutions, it encourages the emergence of new projects in sustainable energy. The company understands that its main mission is to transition humanity to clean energy, not to monopolize technologies.
That's the logic behind it. Openness as protection from trolls and simultaneously as a driver of innovation. Quite a clever move when you think about it.
