Just went through updating my SASSA details and honestly, the process depends on which grant you're on - it's not the same for everyone. If you're getting the permanent grants (old age, disability, child), you can't do this online no matter what. You have to physically go to a SASSA office, fill out their Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID and bank statement (has to be recent, within 3 months), and they'll sort it out. Takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify, so if you need the change to apply next month, you better do it before the 15th or you're waiting another cycle.
Now if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 or R350 relief), that's way easier - it's all online through their portal. You just enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS to your registered number, and you update your bank details there. Same rule though: the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or anything like that. And when you're updating your cellphone number on SRD, you get an OTP sent to verify it's actually you.
Honestly, the trickiest part is making sure you have the right documents ready before you go to the office if you're on permanent grants. People waste time going back and forth. Also watch out for fake SASSA websites trying to get your info - stick to the official portal only. If the online thing doesn't work or you're stuck, just call their helpline on 0800 60 10 or email them. Sometimes waiting for support is worth it rather than getting scammed.
