Iranian Foreign Minister Alaraghchi spoke by phone with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov on the 2nd to exchange views on the regional and international situation amid the background of the United States and Israel conducting military strikes against Iran. According to information released by Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on social media, Alaraghchi said during the call that the insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz was caused by the United States and Israel. Alaraghchi reiterated, “At present, ships from countries that are not involved in military aggression against Iran can pass through the Strait of Hormuz.” Alaraghchi condemned the United States and some countries for pressuring Iran at the United Nations Security Council, and emphasized that any provocative action would only make the situation even more complicated. He said that the Security Council resolutions adopted on the issue of the Strait of Hormuz cannot resolve any problem. Alaraghchi emphasized Iran’s inherent right to defend its sovereignty, national security, and territorial integrity. He strongly condemned the US and Israel’s attacks on infrastructure such as universities and research centers, as well as bridges, and attacks on cultural heritage such as the Orthodox church in Tehran. He said these actions blatantly violate international law and called on UNESCO to respond to these criminal acts. During the call, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s position condemning military aggression against Iran and briefed Alaraghchi on Russia’s efforts to ease tensions. Lavrov emphasized that all parties must return to diplomatic channels and seek a political solution to the crisis. Russia will put forward various initiatives and suggestions to ease regional tensions and manage the crisis. The two foreign ministers agreed to continue consultations and coordination in the bilateral, regional, and international domains. ( Xinhua News Agency )
