Blue Origin’s “New Glenn” heavy-lift rocket experienced an anomaly during a launch attempt on the 19th, failing to deliver the satellite into the planned orbit. The rocket has now been officially grounded. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp stated on the 20th that the company is conducting an investigation under the supervision of the Federal Aviation Administration.
During the launch on the 19th, “New Glenn” was launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Subsequently, the first stage of the rocket landed as planned on a recovery ship in the Atlantic Ocean, but the second stage, carrying the “Bluebird” 7 satellite for US-based AST SpaceMobile, experienced a malfunction and failed to complete the satellite insertion into orbit.
The Orlando Sentinel reported on the 20th that the rocket has been suspended from further launches as per regulations. The Federal Aviation Administration stated it has noted the incident involving the second stage of the “New Glenn” rocket and has reported the situation to NASA, the National Transportation Safety Board, and the U.S. Space Force.
Limp said that preliminary data indicates that during the second ignition of the rocket’s second stage, a BE-3U engine failed to produce sufficient thrust, preventing the vehicle from reaching its intended orbit; Blue Origin is investigating the incident under FAA supervision, analyzing relevant data, implementing improvements, and striving to resume flight missions as soon as possible.
This mission marks the third launch of the “New Glenn” rocket and the first time Blue Origin has used a refurbished first stage. (Xinhua News Agency)
