On April 2nd local time, the United Nations Security Council held a special meeting to discuss close cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council. UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific, Khalil, issued a warning at the meeting, stating that the situation in the Middle East is sliding toward a dangerous edge and urging all parties to immediately de-escalate the situation to prevent conflict escalation and global catastrophe. Khalil also expressed high appreciation for the restraint shown by GCC member states in complex regional conflicts and their key roles in issues such as Gaza, Lebanon, and Yemen. Khalil stated that this meeting is regarded as a historic milestone in the relationship between the United Nations and the GCC. In a time of intense regional turmoil, this “indispensable” partnership will be an important force in preventing large-scale conflicts and maintaining stability in the Middle East. (CCTV News)
