Just realized I need to update my SASSA details before the deadline hits. Apparently there's a difference between how you change things depending on which grant you're on - caught me off guard.
If you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you can't just do it online like I thought. You actually have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account - they want a recent bank statement or official letter from the bank. Takes up to 21 working days to process, and if you submit after the 15th of the month, you'll have to wait another cycle. Kind of annoying but I get why they're strict about it.
Now the SRD R370 grant is different - that one's all online, which makes sense since it was designed to move fast. You go to the SRD portal, enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you can update your banking details from there. The whole thing takes a few days to weeks to verify. You obviously can't use someone else's account though, has to be in your name.
For changing your phone number, permanent grant holders need to visit the office or call 0800 60 10 11. With SRD, there's a contact details page where you enter your ID and application number, put in your new number, get an OTP sent to verify it, and you're done. Just make sure you're using the actual official SASSA website because there are fake sites out there trying to scam people.
Anyone else dealing with this right now? The process isn't complicated once you know which route applies to you.
