Just realized a lot of people still don't know the easiest way to update their SASSA banking details, especially for child grants. So here's what I figured out after going through it myself. If you're getting a permanent grant like child support, you pretty much have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office—can't do it online unfortunately. You'll need your ID, proof of the new bank account (stamped bank statement within 3 months works), and they'll have you fill out a Payment Method Change Form. Takes about 21 working days for the bank to verify everything, so submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in the next cycle. Now if you're on the SRD grant, that's a different story. You can actually change your child grant to bank account online through their portal, which is way more convenient. Just go to the SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure link via SMS. The whole thing takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification. One thing though—the account has to be registered in your name, no joint accounts or anything like that. Also make sure to update your cellphone number while you're at it because they use it for verification and payment alerts. If the online process gets messy, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit your local office. Honestly, the SRD portal is pretty straightforward if you're trying to change your grant details online, but for permanent grants you're stuck going in person. Worth knowing the difference so you don't waste time trying the online route.
