Just went through the whole process of updating my SASSA banking details and honestly, it wasn't as complicated as I thought. If you're getting grants and need to change your banking info, here's what actually happens.
So first thing—if you're on a permanent grant like disability or child support, you can't do this online. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office. Yeah, I know, annoying. But you need to fill out the Payment Method Change Form and bring your original ID plus a copy. For the new bank account, they want official proof—a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name. They won't pay into joint accounts or anything in someone else's name, so make sure that's sorted.
The whole verification takes up to 21 working days once they send it to the bank. Pro tip: submit your request before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another cycle.
Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier—everything's online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, and you just update your banking details through that. Same rule applies though: account must be in your name.
One more thing that caught me off guard—changing your cellphone number is just as important. For SRD, use the contact details portal on their site. You'll need your ID and Application ID, enter your new number, and they'll send an OTP to verify. For permanent grants, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office.
Stay away from any unofficial websites claiming to help with this stuff. Stick to the official SASSA channels—way safer that way.
