Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA details, especially when they need to change their R350 number or banking info. Thought I'd share what actually works because the official guides can be confusing.

So here's the thing - if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 emergency relief), changing your number is way easier. You literally do it all online through their portal. Just go to the SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, click it, put in your new number, verify with the OTP code they send, and you're done. Takes like 10 minutes if the site isn't acting up. The whole point is it's supposed to be quick and digital-only.

But if you're on permanent grants - old age, disability, child support, whatever - that's different. You actually have to go to your local SASSA office in person. Can't do it online no matter what. You need to fill out the Payment Method Change Form, bring your original ID and a copy, plus a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months) showing the account is in your name. They won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. Then you wait up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything.

One thing that tripped me up - if you submit after the 15th of the month, you're waiting another cycle before the new details kick in. So timing matters.

Also heads up, there are fake SASSA websites out there trying to scam people into giving their details. Always make sure you're on the actual official site. If the online stuff doesn't work, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or go in person. It takes longer but at least you know it's legit.

Anyone else had issues changing their number or banking details? What worked for you?
