Just went through the whole SASSA banking details update thing and honestly, it's not as complicated as people make it sound, but you gotta know the right steps. If you're on a permanent grant, you can't just change your banking details online like you'd think - you actually have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (a recent bank statement works), and they'll have you fill out the Payment Method Change Form. Takes about 21 working days for the bank to verify everything, so if you need it done by next month's payment, submit before the 15th or you'll have to wait another cycle.
For the SRD grant though, it's way different - that's all online which makes sense since they handle so many applications. You go to the SASSA SRD portal, punch in your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. Enter your new bank account details through that link and you're done. Only thing is, the account has to be in your name - no joint accounts or third-party stuff.
Changing your cellphone number is actually pretty important because that's how they send you verification codes and payment notifications. For SRD, there's a dedicated contact portal where you enter your ID, new number, and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. If the online thing gives you trouble, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or email them. Heads up though - there are fake websites out there claiming they can update your SASSA details, so always use the official portal. Not worth risking your info for a shortcut.
