Just realized a lot of people don't know the proper way to update their SASSA grant banking details, especially if you're on the SRD. I had to figure this out recently and thought I'd share because there's a lot of confusion around it.
So here's the thing - if you're getting a permanent grant like old age or disability, you actually have to go in person to a SASSA office to change your account number. They need your ID, proof of the new bank account (stamped bank statement or letter from the bank, nothing older than three months), and you fill out their Payment Method Change Form. The whole process takes up to 21 working days after they send it to the bank. And if you want it to happen next month, you need to submit before the 15th.
But if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier - you can do the whole thing online through their portal. You enter your SA ID, they send you an SMS link, you click it and enter your new account details. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. Just make sure the account is in your name only, no joint accounts or anything.
The phone number part is similar - permanent grants, you call 0800 60 10 11 or go to the office. SRD grant, you can update it online through their contact portal or call the helpline. They'll send you an OTP to verify the new number.
One warning though - there are fake websites out there pretending to help change your SRD details. Always use the official SASSA portal to avoid getting scammed. Has anyone else had issues with the online process taking longer than expected?
