Just went through the whole SASSA update process and honestly, it's not as bad as people make it sound. So if you're trying to change your bank details, here's what actually happens depending on which grant you're on. For the regular grants like disability or old age pension, you can't do it online—you've gotta physically go to your nearest SASSA office. They'll give you a form, you submit your ID and bank statement (has to be less than 3 months old), and that's basically it. Takes about 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in the next payment cycle, otherwise you're waiting another month. The whole changing bank details thing is pretty strict though—account has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or third-party nonsense. For the SRD grant, it's actually way easier because you can do the whole thing through online banking on their portal. You just enter your ID, they send you an SMS link, click it, update your details, done. Takes a few days to weeks for verification but at least you're not sitting in an office for hours. If you're also updating your cellphone number, same deal—SRD has an online contact portal where you enter your new number and they verify it with an OTP. Regular grants need you to visit the office though. Honestly the online banking option for SRD is such a game-changer compared to the old system. Just make sure you're using the actual official SASSA website because there's apparently fake sites trying to scam people. If the portal gives you grief, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or email them. Has anyone else had issues with the verification taking longer than expected?
