Just realized a lot of people are struggling with their SASSA status update when it comes to banking details, especially with December payments coming up. If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just update online like you might expect—you have to actually go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than three months works), and they'll give you a form to fill out. The whole process takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify your new banking details, so if you want it done by next month's payment, submit before the 15th or you're waiting another cycle.
Now, if you're on the SRD grant, it's different—way more digital. You go online to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a link via SMS to update your banking details. Same rule though: the account has to be in your name, no joint accounts or anything. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification after you submit.
For your phone number, if it's a permanent grant, just call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office to notify them. For SRD, there's an online contact details page where you enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, get an OTP sent to confirm it, and you're done. Honestly, the phone number part is way easier than the banking details update. Just don't use any sketchy unofficial websites claiming to help—stick to the official SASSA portal only. That's how people get their information stolen.
