just realized how many people don't know the proper way to update their sassa banking details, especially with the December payments coming up. got caught off guard myself when my bank account changed and had to figure this out.

so here's the thing - if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do this online like you might think. you actually have to go in person to your nearest sassa office. they'll have you fill out a payment method change form, and you need to bring your original id, a copy, plus proof of your new bank account - either a bank statement from the last 3 months or an official letter from your bank saying the account is active and in your name. important: it has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything like that.

once they process it, it goes to the bank for verification which takes up to 21 working days. heads up though - if you want the change to actually take effect the following month, you need to submit before the 15th. miss that and you're waiting another cycle.

for the srg grant it's different - that one's all online through the official portal. you enter your id, they send you a secure link via sms, and you update your banking details there. way faster process.

phone number changes work similarly depending on which grant you're on. permanent grants? go to the office or call 0800 60 10 11. srg grant? use their contact portal with your id and application id, they'll send an otp to verify.

real talk - there are fake websites out there trying to get people's info, so always make sure you're using the official sassa links. not worth the risk. anyone else had to deal with this recently?
