Just realized a lot of people are struggling with updating their SASSA details, so thought I'd share what I learned. If you're getting permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you can't do banking details changes online—you have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your original ID and proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works). They'll give you a Payment Method Change Form to fill out, and here's the thing: the account has to be 100% in your name, no joint accounts allowed. Once you submit it, give it about 21 working days for the bank verification, and remember to get it in before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next payment cycle.

Now if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 relief thing), it's way different—the whole process is online through the official SASSA SRD portal, which is actually pretty secure. You go to the srd sassa gov za portal, enter your 13-digit ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your banking details from there. Same rule applies though: account must be in your name. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification.

For changing your cellphone number, permanent grant recipients should visit their local office or call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. With SRD, there's a dedicated contact details page where you enter your ID and Application ID, add your new number, they send an OTP for verification, done. Fair warning though: there are fake websites out there pretending to do this stuff, so always use the official SASSA link. If the online thing isn't working, just call or visit in person—honestly, that's often the safest move anyway, even if there's a wait.
