Just went through the whole SASSA banking details update thing and honestly, it's not as straightforward as you'd think. Depends on what grant you're on, apparently.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), forget doing it online. You actually have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office - no way around it. They'll give you a form to fill out, and you need to bring your ID and proof of your new bank account. The bank statement can't be older than 3 months, or they'll ask for a letter from the bank instead. And here's the thing - the account has to be in YOUR name only. No joint accounts, no third-party stuff. They send it to the bank for verification after that, which takes up to 21 days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in the next payment cycle, otherwise you're waiting another month.
Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's way different. It's all online through their portal, which is actually pretty smooth. You just enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, and you update your banking details through that secure page. Still takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify, but at least you don't have to leave your house.
Changing your cellphone number is important too because that's how they send you verification codes and payment notifications. For SRD, there's a contact details page where you can update it - you'll get an OTP sent to confirm. For permanent grants, you might need to call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or just visit the office. Heads up though - there are fake websites out there claiming to help with changing bank details. Always use the official SASSA portal to avoid getting scammed. Anyone else had issues with this process?
