Just saw that Rassie van der Dussen officially retired from international cricket and honestly, it hit different. The guy announced it on April 2 and the message was genuinely emotional - you could tell this meant everything to him. He kept saying how much wearing the Proteas jersey meant, all the sacrifice involved. Not gonna lie, it's a loss for South African cricket.
What's interesting about Rassie van der Dussen is that he wasn't flashy, right? Like he wasn't the guy making highlight reels every match, but he was consistently there when it mattered. Started in T20Is back in 2018, then made this insane ODI debut in 2019 with 93 runs. That kind of start usually signals something special coming. And it did - the man built a proper career across all three formats.
The numbers are solid: 57 T20Is, 71 ODIs, 18 Tests. But what actually stands out is his World Cup performances, especially 2023 when he dropped 133 on New Zealand. That innings showed he could take down quality attacks on the biggest stage. His ODI average stayed above 50 for most of his career, which is genuinely rare. Only AB de Villiers had a higher average for South Africa, so that tells you something.
There's also the leadership angle - captained SA in West Indies last year and again during that Zimbabwe series. You don't get those opportunities unless the team really respects you. Rassie van der Dussen clearly earned that trust through years of steady performances. His last game was August 2025 against Australia in a T20I.
He's not completely done though - plans to keep playing domestic cricket for the Lions and might move into coaching. So the game's not losing him entirely, which is good. Honestly respect the way he handled the exit - no drama, just gratitude and reflection. That's how you know a professional.
