Just realized a lot of people still don't know how to properly update their SASSA banking details. Like, the process is different depending on which grant you're getting, and if you mess it up, you could miss payments for a whole month. Not ideal.
So if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you literally can't do this online. You have to go to a SASSA office in person, fill out their Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID and a recent bank statement. They need to verify everything before sending it to the bank, which takes up to 21 working days. And here's the thing - you've gotta submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to work for next month's payment. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
But if you're on the SRD grant, it's actually way easier. You can do your SASSA banking details update online through their portal - just enter your ID number, they'll send you a secure SMS link, and you update everything from there. Takes a few days to verify though.
For your SASSA status check or if you need to change your cellphone number, similar rules apply. Permanent grants need a visit, SRD is mostly online. The mobile number thing is important because they use it to send you verification codes and payment notifications.
Honestly, if you're unsure about anything, just call the SASSA helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit your local office. Better to confirm than lose a payment, you know?
