According to Decrypt, American mobster John Gotti's grandson Carmine G. Agnello was sentenced to 15 months in prison and ordered to pay approximately $1.27 million after fraudulently applying for about $1.1 million in U.S. pandemic relief loans. He transferred about $420k of the funds to cryptocurrency-related businesses instead of reporting the intended use. The case shows that during the relaxed loan issuance environment amid the pandemic, some funds were transferred to the crypto sector, and regulators estimate there is a significant risk of large-scale fraud in related projects.
