Ripple releases a phased roadmap for quantum resistance: plans to upgrade the XRP Ledger by 2028
Odaily Planet Daily News reports that Ripple has announced a phased roadmap, planning to promote quantum-resistant upgrades to the XRP Ledger by 2028. The plan includes developing an emergency “Quantum-Day” protocol to respond to sudden quantum computing threats and collaborating with Project Eleven for preliminary testing and validation. Ripple states that this move aims to prepare in advance for a post-quantum secure transition, with the entire plan progressing through four phases:
Phase One: Q-Day Emergency Preparedness (already initiated). Establish a Quantum Day (Q-Day) emergency response mechanism. If the current classical cryptography system is suddenly compromised, the network will immediately cease accepting traditional public key signatures and force migration to quantum-safe accounts.
Phase Two: Risk Assessment and Algorithm Testing (first half of 2026). Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of post-quantum cryptography on the XRP Ledger network’s performance, storage, and bandwidth. Collaborate with Project Eleven to conduct validator-level testing and Devnet benchmark testing, deploy NIST-standardized ML-DSA quantum-safe signature schemes, and develop a post-quantum custody wallet prototype.
Phase Three: Devnet Hybrid Integration (second half of 2026). Parallel integration of candidate post-quantum signature schemes with existing elliptic curve signatures on the developer network (Devnet), allowing developers to test performance and system impact without affecting the mainnet. Simultaneously explore post-quantum zero-knowledge proof primitives and homomorphic encryption techniques for confidential transfers, advancing privacy and compliance capabilities for tokenized real-world assets on XRPL.
Phase Four: Full Mainnet Upgrade (target 2028). Submit formal protocol amendments, which, upon validator approval, will fully enable native post-quantum cryptography on the mainnet. (Cointelegraph)
