No more answering every question!
In social interactions, answering every question is a major taboo. It can cause others to unconsciously figure out your bottom line, and the faster you respond, the easier it is for them to manipulate you. This guide will teach you two tricks to regain control and handle boundary-crossing questions.
1. The trap of answering every question
Responding to all others' questions without thinking may put you in a passive position.
Core mindset of answering every question: Think like a “servant,” believing you must answer; the flow of information is one-way output, revealing your bottom line; others will think you are easily manipulated and not respected; the ultimate result is falling into passivity and potential exploitation.
Core mindset of wise response: I have the right not to answer; the flow of information is two-way, with equal exchange; others will sense your boundaries and respect you; the ultimate result is taking control and maintaining boundaries.
2. Two techniques to reverse passivity
When facing boundary-crossing questions, remember these two steps to easily resolve them.
First step: Don’t speak, first assess
Your gaze is the best “security check” tool.
Method: From top to bottom, quietly look at the other person for 3 seconds.
Main purpose: Make the other person feel you are weighing their character and intentions behind the question. This glance can immediately regain control in your hands.
Second step: Use questions instead of answers, kick the ball back
Elegantly kick the question back to the other person.
Method: Use a universal, test-like response.
Response 1: “That’s an interesting question. How did you come to ask that?”
Response 2: “What are your thoughts?”
Main purpose: If the other person has bad intentions, they will immediately feel guilty and justify themselves. Through questioning, you can probe their true motives without revealing yourself directly.
3. Core principle: Spot the probing, maintain boundaries
All boundary-crossing questions are essentially tests. The more you answer, the more you give others leverage to manipulate you.
Final advice: From today on, control your mouth, use your eyes well, and learn to ask questions. Easily turn all passivity into control, and master the initiative in social interactions.
