Toll Scam Emerges in Strait of Hormuz, Ships Targeted and Attacked
On April 21, Al Jazeera reported that the Greek maritime risk management company MARISKS warned that unidentified individuals are impersonating Iranian authorities to send messages to certain shipping companies, demanding payment of transit fees in cryptocurrency in exchange for permission to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The company stated, ‘These specific messages are fraudulent; these emails were not sent by Iranian authorities.’ MARISKS indicated that, to its knowledge, at least one ship that attempted to navigate out of the strait on Saturday was a victim of this scam and was subsequently attacked by gunfire. Due to Iran’s re-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to U.S. restrictions on its ports, hundreds of ships and approximately 20,000 sailors are currently stranded in the Gulf region, unable to transit.
