German Chancellor Mertz on the 20th stated that there is no basis for intervention in Cuba, and Cuba does not pose any threat to third countries. He said, “I cannot see what grounds there are for (U.S.) intervention.” Brazilian President Lula visited Germany from the 19th to the 20th. Mertz said at a joint press conference with Lula that if there is a conflict, it should be resolved peacefully through diplomatic means. Unjustly igniting new conflicts in the world will only create more problems. Mertz also stated that the United States currently has no reason to initiate such actions. He expressed hope that the ongoing actions can end peacefully as soon as possible. Lula said at the press conference that Cuba has endured years of sanctions and blockade, which is a “global scandal,” because a major world power has imposed a blockade on its people out of pure ideological motives, preventing a country from determining its own destiny.
