Recently, it has been noted that the Italian Prime Minister has been quite active on energy issues. It is said that she recently flew to Saudi Arabia, mainly to strengthen energy cooperation with the Gulf region. In simple terms, Italy still relies heavily on Middle Eastern oil and natural gas, and this visit aims to reinforce that energy supply chain.
From a policy perspective, the Italian government has extended the fuel tax relief policy until May 1st to cope with rising energy prices, and has additionally allocated about 500 million euros to alleviate this issue. This indicates that Italy is under significant pressure regarding energy costs.
In fact, this reflects a broader background—the changing situation in the Middle East directly impacts Europe's energy security. As an important economy in Southern Europe, Italy has a strong dependence on stable energy supplies. Through this diplomatic visit and policy support, Italy aims to secure more stable energy sources and ease the impact of domestic energy prices on consumers and businesses.
From the perspective of energy geopolitics, Italy’s series of measures reflect European countries’ anxiety over energy independence and supply security. Rather than simple commercial cooperation, it is more about strategic planning for long-term energy stability.
