Just found out Steam is adding sales tax to marketplace transactions now, at least in some US states. So apparently this is happening because of some 2018 Supreme Court ruling that changed how online tax collection works. Wild that it took this long to actually implement it though.
The whole thing is causing absolute chaos in the community. Gamers are calling it theft, comparing it to taxing monopoly money lol. Some people are saying they'll just stop using Steam's marketplace entirely. The confusion is real too - like nobody really understands how this Steam tax situation is supposed to work across different regions, especially in Canada where people are saying it's already active.
I get that governments need their taxes, but people have a point about digital goods being different. Some states don't tax them at all (Montana, Nevada) while others are hitting you with 7%+. The new checkout screen will at least show you exactly what Steam tax you're paying, so there's that I guess. Still feels like another fee we didn't ask for though.
