Today I just learned something quite terrifying - there is a tiny blue octopus that is extremely venomous, and it can blend into seafood when you eat hotpot without anyone noticing. If you're not careful and fail to detect it, the consequences can be very severe because its toxins are not destroyed by boiling water.
In fact, this blue octopus belongs to the genus Hapalochlaena, which includes 4 highly venomous species living in shallow waters and coral reefs in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. They are distributed from Japanese waters to Australia. The interesting thing is that they have distinctive blue spots on their bodies, which help people recognize them quickly — but when you're focused on eating hotpot, it's easy to overlook them.
According to Animal Planet, the blue octopus is ranked among the most venomous marine creatures on the planet. A single blue octopus contains enough venom to kill up to 26 people within a few minutes. Its toxin is a complex mixture of tetrodotoxin, histamine, tryptamine, octopamine, acetylcholine, and other substances. When it enters the body, it causes nausea, respiratory failure, heart failure, severe muscle paralysis, and even blindness, potentially leading to death within minutes if not treated promptly.
The most terrifying part is that currently, there is no antidote for blue octopus poisoning. Doctors can only try to support respiration and help the patient survive the critical phase. The main cause of death is usually paralysis of the diaphragm leading to suffocation. So everyone must be extremely careful when eating seafood, especially hotpot. If you see strange blue spots on seafood, absolutely do not touch them!
