I came across the ranking of the most dangerous cities in the world by crime rate for 2023, and honestly, some results were expected, while others surprised me. At the top are, of course, Caracas, Pretoria, Johannesburg — we already knew that. But interestingly, many American cities appear on the list of the most dangerous cities in the world: Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta. Rio de Janeiro and other Latin American cities are also near the top.
What surprised me is that London, Paris, and New York are much lower than I expected. Tokyo is ranked 310th, Singapore 313th. It seems that different countries count crimes differently. The most dangerous cities in this ranking are mostly megacities with issues related to violence and drug trafficking.
I'm curious, how are such rankings generally compiled? What data do they base it on? Maybe someone understands the methodology?
