Just scrolling through some cost of living data and it's wild how Switzerland absolutely dominates the most expensive place to live in the world rankings. Like, six of the top six cities are all Swiss - Zurich at 112.5, Geneva at 111.4, Basel at 110.7, Lausanne, Lugano, and Bern. It's basically a Swiss monopoly on expensive cities.
For context, Numbeo uses NYC as the baseline at 100 points. Anything above that is pricier, anything below is cheaper. So Zurich being 112.5 means you're paying about 12.5% more than New York just to live there. Everything costs more - housing, food, eating out, you name it. But apparently salaries there are insane too, averaging 7,000 to 9,000 CHF monthly, so locals manage.
The US does have some heavy hitters on the list though. NYC itself is the baseline at 100, then you've got Honolulu at 94.4, San Francisco at 90.7, Seattle at 86, and Boston at 82.7. Mostly driven by tech industry demand and real estate. Even LA and San Diego made the top 25. Norway's another surprise player with multiple cities ranking high - Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen, Stavanger all showing up.
Asia's represented but not as much - Singapore at 85.3 is the strongest showing, with Tel Aviv and Hong Kong further down. Europe's clearly the most expensive place to live in the world overall when you look at the data. Switzerland's wealth and high standard of living just puts it in another league compared to everywhere else.
