So I was wondering the other day—can you use any ATM to deposit cash? Turns out it's way more complicated than I thought. Apparently not all ATMs take deposits, and even if they do, there's usually a catch depending on which bank you're with.

I looked into it and most traditional banks let you deposit at their branch ATMs or machines in their network. But here's the thing: there are actual limits. Capital One caps cash deposits at $5,000 per transaction, and Wells Fargo only lets you deposit up to 30 bills and checks combined. If you're using an ATM outside your bank's network, it can take way longer for the money to show up—like four business days with PNC. Plus you might get hit with fees.

The process itself is pretty straightforward though. You insert your card, enter your PIN, pick deposit, choose your account, feed in your cash or checks, and confirm. Most modern ATMs don't need envelopes anymore. But here's my takeaway: before you assume you can use any ATM to deposit cash, definitely check with your bank first. Look at their website or app to see which machines actually accept deposits and what restrictions apply. Saves you from showing up somewhere and wasting time.

Online banks are even trickier since they don't have physical branches. Some like Radius Bank let you deposit at their ATMs, but Capital One 360 won't take cash at most ATMs—only at their actual locations. So yeah, the answer to 'can you use any ATM to deposit cash' is basically no, but your bank should tell you exactly where you can. Just do that homework before you head out.
