Just found out that some regular bills sitting in your wallet could actually be worth serious money. Like, way more than face value. Been reading about this and it's kind of wild how certain $2, $50 and $100 bills from specific years are actually valuable dollar bills that collectors will pay premium prices for.
The old ones are obviously the most interesting. Those 1928 series $2 bills with red seals? Apparently circulated ones can go for anywhere from $4 to $175 depending on condition. And if you somehow have an uncirculated one in pristine shape, we're talking $20,000+. Even the 1953 red seal $2 bills hold value - circulated ones in good condition fetch $3 to $6, but uncirculated? Up to $12-18.
Star notes are apparently a big deal too. These are basically replacement bills with a star at the end of the serial number, and collectors go crazy for them. A 1995 $2 star note in uncirculated condition can supposedly hit $500. Same deal with the $50 and $100 denominations - star notes from 1985 and 1996 can be worth $60-$398 and $150-$350 respectively.
The condition matters a ton. A 1934 series $50 bill in crisp, extremely fine condition goes for $65-75. The 1929 brown seal $50s in good circulation can fetch $75-100. And for $100 bills, a 1966 red seal is supposedly worth $135-169, while certain 2009A series star notes can hit over $1,175.
The weird part is these valuable dollar bills are still technically in circulation. Like they could legitimately be in someone's wallet right now. The rarity, condition, and historical background really change the game for collectors. Before selling anything though, definitely get it checked by an expert or auction dealer because not every old bill is actually worth something. But yeah, worth checking your cash drawer just in case.
