Just found out cucumbers are actually a fruit, not a vegetable lol. Anyway, been wondering if my dog can have them and apparently yes - cucumbers safe for dogs and they're honestly a great snack option. Low calorie, mostly water, perfect for summer when my pup needs hydration.
So the vet says to keep it moderate though. Treats should only be like 10% of their daily calories, and you gotta cut them into bite-sized pieces to avoid choking. One cup of sliced cucumber is only about 15 calories, which is wild. For smaller dogs, just a couple slices a few times a week does the trick.
The nutritional breakdown is pretty solid - high water content, potassium for muscle function, antioxidants. Even the skin is safe if you wash it first to get rid of pesticides. Some dogs might have trouble digesting the seeds though, so I've been removing those just to be safe.
One thing to watch out for - never give them pickled cucumbers because of all the salt, spices, and sometimes onions/garlic in there, which are actually toxic. But raw cucumbers? Totally fine and apparently the best way to feed them.
If you have puppies, introduce them slowly in small amounts to avoid stomach upset. And honestly, cucumbers safe for dogs make a solid alternative to regular treats if your dog needs to watch their weight. Have you tried giving yours any yet?
