Just looked into what a 200k salary actually gets you after taxes in different cities and wow, the gap is wild. I always assumed it was just about cost of living, but taxes are the real killer.
So in places like Las Vegas or Austin, you're taking home around $149-150K from your 200k salary. Pretty solid. But then you look at Portland and it's brutal - single filers only see $131K after taxes. That's nearly $20K difference just because of where you live.
California cities are rough too. LA and San Francisco both hit you with over 32% tax burden. Meanwhile, no state income tax in places like Texas and Florida makes a huge difference. I'm seeing people in Houston or Nashville keeping $149-159K depending on filing status.
The married filing jointly numbers are interesting too - if you're married, the tax hit is noticeably lower across the board. New York and Minneapolis are surprisingly expensive tax-wise, while the Texas cities are way more forgiving on a 200k salary. Definitely something to consider if you're thinking about relocating for work.
