Just spent way too long researching CLEAR and honestly, the pricing is pretty wild if you're not a frequent flyer. So here's what I found out about how much is CLEAR per year - it's $189 base price, which sounds reasonable until you compare it to TSA PreCheck at like $100 for five years. Yeah. That's the difference between paying for a luxury service vs a government program.
The interesting part is how many ways there are to get it cheaper or free. If you fly Delta a lot, you can get CLEAR for $119 through their SkyMiles program, or even free if you hit Diamond status. Same deal with United - their Premier members get discounts. American Express Platinum basically covers the whole cost with a statement credit, which is wild. And if you're military, student, or government employee, they've got reduced rates too.
But here's where I'm torn - how much is CLEAR per year really depends on how much you fly. If you travel a few times monthly, it breaks down to like $5 per trip. But if you only fly 2-3 times a year? You're looking at $60+ per trip just for the membership. Plus CLEAR's only at about 45 airports, so you need to actually use it where you travel.
I think it genuinely makes sense if you're a frequent business traveler or have status with an airline that subsidizes it. Otherwise, TSA PreCheck is probably the smarter move. The real question isn't how much is CLEAR per year in dollars - it's whether you'll actually use it enough to justify it. That's what I'm still figuring out.
