Just went down a rabbit hole on where families actually have the most disposable income in the US, and the data is pretty interesting. Turns out it's not just about earning a high salary—cost of living matters just as much. According to SmartAsset's research, some areas with the highest disposable income for families are actually in Texas, which surprised me. Places like Fairfax County, Virginia top the list with around $30k in disposable income for a three-person household, but Santa Clara County, California and Collin County, Texas are right there too. What's wild is that even though Santa Clara has a median household income of $150k+, the cost of living is so insane (131% above national average) that disposable income ends up lower than you'd expect. Meanwhile, Texas counties like Fort Bend and Denton are crushing it—solid median incomes but way more reasonable cost of living. If you're looking at cities with highest disposable income, you've got to factor in both sides of the equation. Some of the other top spots are in New York, Maryland, New Jersey, and Utah. The takeaway? High income alone doesn't guarantee financial breathing room. You need that sweet spot where earnings outpace expenses. Pretty useful to know if you're thinking about relocating.
