Been doing some research on the cheapest place to retire on the West Coast and honestly there are way more options than I expected if you've got around 250k saved up. Like, everyone immediately thinks California and yeah, the median home prices there are steep, but there are some solid pockets that won't drain your savings.
So I started looking at smaller metros across Washington, Oregon and California where you can actually find decent homes under 500k. Spokane in Washington is interesting - homes running around 465k median, rent for a one-bedroom under 1,200. Coos Bay down in Oregon is even more affordable at 395k median, though it's pretty small with only about 15k people. If you want something with more of a city vibe but still budget-friendly, Fresno and Modesto in California are surprisingly doable.
The coastal options are tempting too. Ocean Shores and Seal Beach have that beach retirement dream going on, though Seal Beach is pricey. But places like Eureka up north in California hit that sweet spot - coastal living, median homes around 475k, and way cheaper rent than the bigger cities. Tacoma, Washington is another solid pick if you want something more established.
Honestly what surprised me most is how many of these towns have older populations already settled there - some places are 40% over 65. Makes sense they'd be good retirement spots. If you're serious about finding an affordable West Coast retirement destination without blowing through your savings, these metros are definitely worth checking out more closely.
