Just did some digging into where you can actually afford to live without sacrificing safety in the US, and honestly, the findings are pretty interesting. Turns out there are some solid options if you're willing to look beyond the usual suspects.
So I found this analysis looking at the cheapest places to live in the US that also have low crime rates, and it's not what you'd expect. Ohio dominates the list with seven different towns making the cut—New Philadelphia, Parma Heights, Berea, Mount Vernon, Hamilton, Brunswick, and North Ridgeville all made it. New Philadelphia is at the top with an annual cost of living around $35k and a home value hovering near $186k. That's pretty wild considering the violent crime rate there is less than 1 per 1,000 people.
What caught my attention is that most of these cheapest places to live in the us aren't huge metros. You've got smaller towns like New Ulm in Minnesota (population 14k, annual costs around $36k) and San Elizario in Texas (only 10k people, costs even lower at $36.7k annually). Even some of the slightly bigger ones like Columbus, Indiana or Trenton, Michigan keep costs reasonable while staying safe.
The data shows that if you're serious about finding affordable places to live in the us without worrying constantly about crime, you've got options. Property crime rates vary more than violent crime, but even then, most of these towns are way below national averages. Some places like San Elizario have almost no violent crime at all—0.1 per 1,000.
Obviously, these aren't glamorous locations, and you won't have the same amenities as big cities. But if your priority is stretching your money further while staying in a genuinely safe community, the cheapest places to live in the us might be in these overlooked towns. Worth considering if you're thinking about relocating.
