Just looked at some income data across states and it's wild how different the low middle class threshold is depending on where you live. Maryland's hitting $67,768 as the minimum to be considered lower-middle class, while Mississippi is down at $36,610. That's nearly double the difference.

Makes sense when you think about it - places like Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Hawaii have crazy high costs of living, so the income needed to maintain that middle class lifestyle is way higher. Meanwhile states like West Virginia and Arkansas have way lower thresholds because your money just goes further there.

I was surprised Maryland actually tops the list over California and New York though. The whole lower-middle class income range varies so much that what counts as solid middle class income in one state might not even get you there in another. Kinda puts into perspective why people talk about cost of living so much when discussing salaries and relocations.

The data shows median household income also plays a huge role - the higher the median in a state, the higher the low middle class floor becomes. Interesting stuff if you're thinking about where to settle or what salary you actually need to feel financially comfortable.
