just realized something about those 2023 stimulus checks a lot of people got from their states back in 2022. turns out the IRS finally clarified that most of them aren't taxable? like, if you got payments from california, colorado, new york, florida or like 16 other states, you probably don't have to report that as income. they classified it as general welfare or disaster relief which apparently isn't taxable federally. wild that it took them until mid-february to announce it lol

so if you already filed your taxes early thinking you had to include it, you might want to check. the stimulus 2023 situation was confusing af because nobody knew the tax treatment at first. georgia, massachusetts, south carolina and virginia residents had some specific rules though - had to meet certain criteria with refunds and deductions

theres still some states that were handing out remaining stimulus payments through 2023. new jersey had that anchor property tax relief thing, massachusetts had their 62f refund program, alaska was still doing their permanent fund dividend applications. new mexico let people file late to claim rebates up to $1500. honestly the whole stimulus 2023 rollout was messy but at least the tax part got cleared up eventually. did anyone else get caught off guard by this?
