Just found out about these rare doubled die pennies and honestly it's wild. So basically a doubled die penny is when the coin die gets shifted during production, causing the design to print twice on the coin. Sounds like a printing error but collectors go absolutely crazy for them.

The craziest part? Someone actually sold a 1958 doubled die penny for over 1.1 million dollars back in 2023. Like, an actual penny. The most famous one is the 1955 Lincoln cent - those go for anywhere between 1k to 85k depending on condition. Then there's the 1972 version which is more affordable but still worth solid money, like 175 to 650 bucks. The 1969-S ones from San Francisco are supposedly worth tens of thousands each.

Apparently the 1955 error happened because the Philadelphia Mint was running double shifts during a coin shortage and somehow the doubled die die slipped through inspection. They didn't catch it until like 20k-24k coins were already made. Instead of melting them all, they just let them circulate, which is why they're so rare and valuable now.

The thing that gets me is some of these doubled die pennies might still be floating around in regular circulation. Like the 1972 doubled die has pretty obvious doubling on the front so if you actually looked at your change you might spot one. Makes that old rhyme about finding a penny actually mean something.
