Just saw this interesting tidbit about Elon Musk's nationality and ethnicity that I never really knew. So he's been clarifying that he's not from an Afrikaner background like most people assume, but actually British/English descent. Born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1971, but his family roots are English, not Dutch/German/French like Afrikaners. Pretty wild that he drew a comparison to JRR Tolkien, who was also born in South Africa but had English parents. I guess there's a whole different vibe between English South Africans and Afrikaners culturally. Musk apparently corrected someone's blog post that had described him growing up in an Afrikaner family, which apparently bugged him enough to set the record straight on Twitter back in 2024. Makes you wonder how much his actual ethnicity and heritage shaped who he became versus what people just assumed. The Tolkien connection is kind of cool though, especially since Musk's apparently obsessed with his books anyway.
