Been looking into where you can actually still buy a house without dropping 500k, and turns out the Midwest is where it's at. Back in 2023, places like Green Bay were sitting around $257k median—way below the national average. Fort Wayne even cheaper at $236k. Just found it wild that you can get a solid 3-4 bedroom house in these cities for under $300k when that's basically impossible on the coasts.

Pittsburgh's the wild card though. It's a big city but homes were going for like $225k median, which is crazy for somewhere with actual culture and job growth. They call it 'Reinvention City' now, totally different from the steel industry days. Good schools, decent nightlife, tech hub vibes.

The catch? A lot of these places still have older homes that need work. Carpeted bathrooms, outdated kitchens, that kind of thing. But if you're willing to look past cosmetic stuff or do some renovations, you can snag something real here. Abilene in Texas had a bunch of new construction options in that range too.

Honestly makes you think about what's actually possible if you're flexible on location. You could buy a house for under $300k in these spots and still have money left over, versus getting crushed by a mortgage elsewhere.
