So I was wondering if I could give my dog some cucumber as a snack, and turns out it's actually a great idea. Apparently cucumbers are super low-calorie and mostly water, which is perfect for keeping dogs hydrated, especially in summer. My vet basically said they're safe and healthy for dogs when you do it right.

The main thing is moderation - treats should only be like 10% of their daily calories. For my smaller dog, that's just a couple of thin slices a few times a week. I learned to always cut them into bite-sized pieces to avoid choking, and some dogs have trouble digesting the seeds so I remove those. One cup of sliced cucumber is only about 15 calories, which is honestly nothing.

I've also been curious about can dogs eat cucamelons since they're similar, and while I haven't found as much info on that, regular cucumbers are definitely the safer bet. The skin is fine too as long as you wash it first to get rid of pesticides. Raw is the way to go - don't even think about giving them pickled ones since the brine has onions and garlic which are actually toxic to dogs.

Beyond just being a healthy snack, cucumbers have potassium for muscle function and antioxidants that help with inflammation. I started giving mine a few slices as a topping on their regular meal and they seem to like it. There are other fruits you can give them too - apples, bananas, blueberries, watermelon - but cucumbers are probably the easiest and safest option to start with. Pretty cool that something so simple from the grocery store can be good for your pup.
