Just found out dogs can totally have cucumbers and honestly it's a game changer for treats. Been giving my pup some sliced ones and she loves them. They're basically just water so super low calorie too, which is perfect if your dog needs to watch their weight.
So here's what I learned - you can give them raw cucumber, skin and all, just make sure you wash it first. The interesting thing is about the seeds though. Apparently most dogs can handle cucumber seeds just fine and they're not toxic, but some dogs might have trouble digesting them. I've been removing the seeds just to be safe with mine, but it's not always necessary. The keyword thing everyone asks is can dog eat cucumber seeds - turns out it depends on the individual dog's digestion.
The amount matters though. Vets say treats including cucumber should only be like 10% of their daily calories. For smaller dogs that's maybe a couple small slices a few times a week, bigger dogs can have more but still keep it reasonable. One cup of sliced cucumber is only about 15 calories so it's pretty safe to not go overboard.
There's also all these other fruits that are safe too - apples, blueberries, watermelon, bananas. But yeah, the cucumber thing is solid because of the hydration factor, especially in summer. Plus it's got potassium and other minerals that are good for them.
If your dog is a choker though, definitely cut it into bite-sized pieces. And never give them pickled cucumbers because of all the salt and spices in the brine. Raw is the way to go. Anyone else doing this with their dogs?
