Been digging into housing markets lately and found something interesting - there are actually quite a few places in the US where you can find genuinely affordable living without sacrificing safety. Most people think you have to choose one or the other, but that's not always true.

I was looking at data from early 2025 and noticed Ohio dominates the cheapest places to live list. Seven cities from Ohio made the top 15 most affordable and safe communities. That's wild when you think about it. New Philadelphia caught my eye first - you're looking at around $1,101 monthly mortgage on homes averaging $186k, with a total yearly cost of living under $36k. The violent crime rate there is pretty low too at 0.69 per 1,000 people.

But Ohio isn't the only state worth checking out. New Ulm, Minnesota has this reputation for being one of the safest small towns around, and the numbers back it up. Violent crime is basically non-existent at 0.29 per 1,000. San Elizario, Texas is another gem - home values around $167k and you're looking at under $37k annually for total cost of living. That's genuinely cheap for the US right now.

What's interesting is how varied these places are. Columbus, Indiana has a bigger population at 51k people but still keeps costs reasonable around $40k yearly. Then you've got smaller towns like Yorktown, Indiana or Parma Heights, Ohio that feel more intimate but offer similar affordability. The livability scores across these places range from low 60s to high 80s, so there's definitely variety in what each community offers.

I noticed a few patterns while going through this. The safest and cheapest place to live in united states tends to be mid-sized towns in the Midwest, though you do get some outliers like Edwardsville, Illinois which has a really impressive livability score of 90. Pennsylvania and Michigan also show up with Butler and Trenton offering solid combinations of low crime and manageable housing costs.

If you're seriously considering relocating to find more affordable housing without moving to sketchy areas, these towns are worth researching. The data was compiled from FBI crime statistics, Census data, and Zillow records, so it's pretty solid. Most of these places have monthly mortgage payments under $1,800, which is honestly refreshing compared to what you see in major metros.

The cheapest option on the list is still New Philadelphia at under $36k annually, but honestly anything under $45k for total yearly cost of living in a safe community feels like a win these days. If you're thinking about where to plant roots or just want to reduce your expenses, these hidden gem communities might be worth the consideration. Places like this remind you that affordable living in the US is still possible if you know where to look.
